10 songs that inspire great storytelling

In most cases, you might be looking for instrumental songs to help you along during writing. For these 10 songs that inspire we’ve focused on epic songs that tell a story. Maybe you can find a character backstory, a mission arc, or some worldbuilding piece in these songs.

1. The River – Bruce Springsteen

A song about a man that knocks up his girl and now goes back to the place he knocked her up to contemplate suicide.

2. Drink with the Living Dead – Ghoultown

A song about a dude that gets challenged to a drinking contest by a shambling corpse

3. Empire of the Clouds – Iron Maiden

A song about the maiden voyage (and subsequent disaster) of the R101, a British zeppelin

4. Goodnight Saigon – Billy Joel

A song about the people that got sent off to a war that seemed pointless, even at the time

5. Imagine – John Lennon

A song about imagining things… like how things would be a lot better if we all just got along

6. Wiskey Lullaby – Brad Paisley

A song about a man that drinks away his sorrows, until it becomes fatal. Then the song changes to the perspective of a woman, who drinks away her sorrows, until it becomes fatal. I guess there’s a pattern to be discerned there somewhere.

7. 7 Years – Lucas Graham

A song about a jong man looking back on his life, and looking forward to the coming years

8. Stan – Eminem

A song about someone with a little bit of a man crush on Eminem

9. Let it go – Frozen (Idina Menzel)

A song about hiding who you truly are, and no longer having to hide it. By the end of it you can’t help but wonder what metaphor they could’ve been hiding underneath all those layers of snow

10. Show must go on – Queen

A song that reminds us that regardless of what life throws at us, the show must always go on

Any other songs that inspire you when you’re writing a character background or are thinking of an epic journey to take your crew on? Don’t hesitate to share it in the comments!
